Foreign Affairs Committee MEPs travel to Indonesia and Vietnam

The visit is a reflection of the European Parliament’s strong interest in greater engagement with its partners in South East Asia.

A delegation of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee will visit Indonesia and Vietnam on 20-24 February. The purpose of the mission is to enhance bilateral relations, to raise the profile of the EU-ASEAN Strategic Partnership, and to focus on cooperation between the parliaments of these countries and the European Parliament.

The delegation, led by the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee David McAllister (EPP, Germany), willstart in Jakarta, which hosts the seat of the ASEAN Secretariat. MEPs will meet with ASEAN counterparts and with representatives of the Indonesian government and parliament to discuss global and regional security dynamics, and their impact on bilateral relations. On human rights, MEPs will meet representatives of civil society and prominent think tanks.

On Wednesday, 23 February, the delegation will travel to Hanoi to meet with officials from the Vietnamese government and parliament to discuss geopolitical issues of mutual concern and strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Two press points are scheduled with the delegation chair – one in Jakarta, on Wednesday, and one in Hanoi on Thursday.

The Committee Chair will be joined by five other MEPs: Michael Gahler (EPP, Germany), Juan Fernando López Aguilar (S&D, Spain), Tonino Picula (S&D, Croatia), Javier Nart (Renew Europe, Spain) and Stelios Kouloglou (the Left, Greece)

Background

The MEPs travel just two months after the first-ever summit between the leaders of ASEAN and EU member states in Brussels on 14 December 2022. This visit is a manifestation of the European Parliament’s strong interest in closer cooperation with its partners in South East Asia.
