David McAllister MEP: On Ukraine (13 December 2023)

I strongly demand the immediate and complete withdrawal of the Russian armed forces and military assets from the sovereign territory of Ukraine, in line with the internationally recognised borders, without any preconditions or further escalation on the ground.

Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine poses a direct threat to the rules-based international order, the principles outlined in the United Nations Charter, and the fundamental democratic values it upholds. The common roots of all the ongoing conflicts around the globe lie in the disregard for international law, the principles of sovereignty, and violation of human rights.

I appeal to the G7, EU, NATO member states and other democratic states to continuously support Ukraine politically, financially, economically and militarily until victory against Russia is achieved. I call for strengthening the military assistance to Ukraine, recognising the importance of delivering weapons and ammunition without limitations on quality, range and type to expedite the resolution of this war.

All the responsible nations must withdraw from supporting the Russian aggression, including by means of military assistance, circumvention of sanctions, and economic cooperation. More sanctions should be imposed on Russia and all the legal loopholes that are used must be fixed to ensure that they are not used for the benefit of the Kremlin regime. I encourage Ukraine to implement democratic reforms. Democracy, the rule of law, and human rights are crucial. Formidable challenges have been posed by the full-scale war. Securing democracy and pluralism inside Ukraine is vital for its success
