Sakharov Prize 2019: debate with Jewher Ilham

On Monday, 16 December, Jewher Ilham, the daughter of the 2019 Sakharov Prize laureate Ilham Tohti, will discuss the human rights situation of the Uyghur minority in China with MEPs.

The joint meeting of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, Committee on Development and Subcommittee on Human Rights will take place from 19.00 to 20.30 CET in Parliament’s Churchill building in Strasbourg, room 200, and will also be web streamed live.

This year’s Sakharov Prize laureate Ilham Tohti has dedicated his life to advocating for the rights of China’s Uyghur minority. Despite being a voice of moderation and reconciliation, since a 2014 show trial, he is currently serving a life sentence in China on separatism-related charges. His daughter, Jewher Ilham, will therefore represent him at this year’s award ceremony in Strasbourg.

The 2019 Sakharov Prize will be awarded during a formal sitting on Wednesday, 18 December, at noon.
