David McAllister MEP: MEPs travel to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan to discuss bilateral and regional cooperation

A seven-member delegation of MEPs will visit Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan on 21-25 August to discuss cooperation in the face of multiple geopolitical challenges.

MEP David McAllister (EPP, DE), Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), will lead a seven-member delegation of MEPs to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan on 21-25 August. During their visit to Central Asia, MEPs will meet their parliamentary counterparts, officials, and government ministers of both countries, EU member state and institutional representatives in the region, as well as business community representatives. Discussions are set to focus on a wide range of issues on the bilateral agenda, chief amongst them regional developments and the potential for closer cooperation in the current challenging geopolitical context, including the impact of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the introduction of EU sanctions on Russia. MEPs will also meet with representatives of civil society groups active in the media and human rights.

Speaking ahead of the mission, Chairman MEP David McAllister said: “The repercussions of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine can be felt particularly in Central Asia. Our partners in the region can count on the EU’s support when it comes to their independence and sovereignty, as well as progress on economic and regional development. Central Asia matters to Europe. And Europe matters to Central Asia.“
