David McAllister MEP: MEPs on the Security and Defence Subcommittee to visit Israel and Palestine

A delegation from the Security and Defence Subcommittee will travel to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories from Friday 8 December to Sunday 10 December.

The delegation, led by Nathalie Loiseau (Renew Europe, France), Chair of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence, and accompanied by Foreign Affairs Committee Chair David McAllister (EPP, Germany), will meet Israeli and Palestinians authorities, Israeli families of the hostages taken captive by Hamas, Palestinian civil society and international partners.

MEPs will try to assess the EU’s current and future role in the region and in particular its two Civilian Common Security and Defence Policy Missions for the Palestinian Territories – EUPOL COPPS and EU BAM Rafah.

In addition to Ms Loiseau and Mr McAllister, the delegation will be comprised of the following MEPs: Rasa Juknevičienė (EPP, Lithuania), Gheorghe-Vlad Nistor (EPP, Romania), Attila Ara-Kovács (S&D, Hungary) and Carina Ohlsson (S&D, Sweden).

More information

The main purpose of the subcommittee’s visit is to discuss how the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) civilian missions – EUPOL COPPS and EU BAM Rafah – are adjusting to the new security reality in the area, following the indiscriminate terrorist attacks launched by Hamas against Israel on 7 October, the subsequent Israeli bombardment and invasion of the Gaza Strip and the upsurge in violence by settlers in the West Bank.

EUPOL COPPS (the EU Coordinating Office for Palestinian Police Support) assists the Palestinian Authority in building its institutions, for a future Palestinian state, focused on security and justice sector reforms.

The European Union Border Assistance Mission for the Rafah Crossing Point (EUBAM Rafah) is a non-executive, non-armed civilian CSDP mission. Its role is to support the Palestinian Authority border agencies, notably by mentoring and advising personnel from the General Administration for Borders and Crossings on working towards a modern, sustainable border management system in line with EU and international standards. The Mission also supports projects on trade facilitation and processing of biometric passports.
