David McAllister MEP: Foreign Affairs Committee MEPs to visit Chile

From 19 to 20 June, MEPs will visit Chile for talks with the country’s authorities and civil society groups about strengthening the EU-Latin America strategic partnership.

During their meetings with Chilean high-level political representatives, civil society groups and think tanks in Santiago and Valparaíso, MEPs will discuss how to reinforce the strategic EU-Latin America bi-regional partnership in view of the upcoming summit between the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Brussels on 17-18 July 2023. They will meet with, among others, Chilean defence minister Maya Fernández, Foreign Affairs Minister Alberto van Klaveren, the President of the Senate Juan Antonio Coloma and the President of the Chamber of Deputies Vlado Mirosevic.

The delegation, led by the Chair of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, David McAllister (EPP, Germany), will also take stock of regional security dynamics against the backdrop of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and China’s continuous assertive global policies.

In addition, MEPs and their Chilean interlocutors will discuss the state of bilateral relations ahead of the forthcoming ratification of the EU-Chile Advanced Framework Agreement by the European Parliament. A joint press point by Mr McAllister and Chilean Senate President Mr Coloma is scheduled for Tuesday 20 June at 09:15 local time in the Ex National Congress Building in Santiago.

After their visit to Chile, MEPs will visit Brazil for meetings with Brazilian authorities and local stakeholders.

Quote

Ahead of the visit, Mr McAllister said: „If the European Union wants to be recognised as a geopolitical actor, we need to deepen our relations with key likeminded partners who value and advocate for the international rules-based order just as much as we do. Chile is such a partner. As the modernised EU-Chile Advanced Framework Agreement stands ready to be signed, our cooperation has never been more significant“.

Composition of the delegation

Besides Mr McAllister, the European Parliament delegation visiting Chile will comprise the following MEPs:

Francisco Millán Mon (EPP, Spain), Leopoldo López Gil (EPP, Spain), Nacho Sánchez Amor (S&D, Spain), José Ramón Bauzá Díaz (Renew Europe, Spain), Jaak Madison (ID, Estonia), Manu Pineda (The Left, Spain), Inma Rodríguez-Piñero (S&D, Spain) and Javi López (S&D, Spain).

Constitutional Affairs Committee MEPs will also visit Chile from 19 to 21 June to discuss with authorities and civil society the second attempt to draft a new Constitution. Read more here.
