Venezuela: AFET & DROI Chairs concerned by the situation of opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez

The Chairs of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs and the  Subcommittee on Human Rights, David McAllister (EPP, DE) and Pier Antonio Panzeri (S&D, IT) respectively, expressed their grave concern about and solidarity with Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo López after the Supreme Court ruled to uphold the decision sentencing him to 14 years imprisonment.

“We call on the Venezuelan Government to release opposition leader Leopoldo López and all other political prisoners who have been imprisoned for expressing their political views.

We reiterate our serious concerns regarding the deteriorating situation of democracy and human rights in Venezuela. The political confrontation is getting more and more acute and the continued and indiscriminate detention of political opponents is only aggravating  tensions in the country. We call on the Venezuelan government to honour its commitments made in the context of the dialogue process thus adopting a constructive attitude so as to return Venezuela to a democratic path”.

In its resolution of 8 June 2016, the European Parliament requested that “the authorities respect and guarantee the constitutional right to peaceful demonstrations”. It also called on the Venezuelan authorities “to guarantee security and the free exercise of rights for all citizens, in particular human rights defenders, journalists, political activists and members of independent non-governmental organisations.
