Tomorrow: Hearing of Commissioner-designate Olivér Várhelyi

The Foreign Affairs Committee will quiz Commissioner-designate for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, on Thursday from 08.00 to 11.00 in the József Antall building, room 4Q2.

The hearing is public and can be followed via EP Live and Europe by Satellite (EbS+).

After the hearing, the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, David McAllister (EPP, DE), will hold a press point close to the hearing room.

Parliament’s Multimedia Centre will provide HD quality videos, high-resolution photos and audio material.

The last row in the hearing room will be reserved for the media. However, seats cannot be reserved individually in advance and will be attributed inside the room on a first-come, first-served basis. Journalists are strongly advised to arrive in good time, as places cannot be guaranteed once the hearing has begun.

There will be an area for camera crews and photographers at the back of the room where a live broadcast signal will be available.

Structure of the hearing and evaluation

The Commissioner-designate will make a 15-minute introductory statement, which will be followed by questions from MEPs. There will be 25 questions altogether: one minute per question, followed by an answer from the Commissioner-designate and a possible follow-up question from the MEP.

The Chair and group representatives (coordinators) of the committee will meet on Thursday, at 14.00, to evaluate the performance of the candidate.

Within 24 hours of completing the evaluation, coordinators will send a confidential letter of recommendation to the Conference of Committee Chairs, stating whether the candidate is qualified both to be Member of the College of Commissioners and to carry out the assigned duties.

The Conference of Presidents will conduct the final evaluation of the hearings on 21 November. The full Commission needs to be elected by a simple majority of the votes cast in Plenary, by roll call. The vote is set to take place on 27 November.
