Sudan after Al-Bashir: exchange of views with new Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok

MEPs in the committees on foreign affairs and development will discuss the latest political developments in Sudan with the country’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok on Monday afternoon.

The 30-year rule of Sudanese dictator Omar al-Bashir came to an end in April this year, when he was deposed in a coup d’état. Since then, the military and opposition have been engaged in a struggle for power amid tensions, protests and repression.

The two parties reached a political agreement in July, which ultimately paved the way for the establishment of the first transitional institutions in August. This agreement is meant to guide a three-year transition to a democratic, civilian-led government.

Mr Hamdok was sworn in as Prime Minister in August.

In addition to listening to his intervention, MEPs are also expected to quiz Mr Hamdok on the dramatic events following the April coup, and discuss the political path ahead for Sudan, including in the areas of development and humanitarian aid, transitional justice for crimes committed during the uprising, economic prospects, violations of human rights and the rule of law situation.

WHEN: Monday 11 November – 17.00 – 18.30 CET.

WHERE: European Parliament’s Paul-Henri Spaak building, room 3C050.
