Press Release: AFET Chair McAllister calls for democratic transition in Venezuela

AFET Chair McAllister calls for democratic transition in Venezuela | News | European Parliament

Following the latest political developments in Venezuela, the Chair of the EP Foreign Affairs Committee David McAllister (EPP, DE) issued this statement:

“The national assembly as the legitimate, democratically elected institution must lead the transition towards a full restitution of democracy in Venezuela.

The Venezuelan authorities have to respect the national assembly’s constitutional rights and protect the rights and freedoms of its members.

President Maduro has lost any legitimacy to lead his country. He needs to step aside and clear the way for a peaceful solution of the current crisis through democratic and free elections.

I urge the Venezuelan authorities to refrain from the use of violence against peaceful protestors.”
