Mogherini to brief MEPs on North Korea crisis, Turkey and Venezuela

MEPs will discuss recent disturbing events in North Korea and Venezuela, but also EU-Turkey relations with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Tuesday afternoon, from 17.00.

MEPs are worried that missile and nuclear tests by North Korea could get out of control, calling on the country to refrain from further provocative actions and to abandon its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.

Venezuela has been experiencing a severe political and economic crisis for months, with almost daily demonstrations against Nicolas Maduro’s regime across the country. The election of a controversial constituent assembly with no opposition members, which has replaced the opposition-controlled legislative assembly, has generated growing international criticism of Maduro´s government.

MEPs already voiced their concern in July regarding EU accession talks with Turkey, calling on the EU Commission and national governments “to formally suspend the accession negotiations with Turkey without delay if the constitutional reform package is implemented unchanged.”
