MEPs to debate the new global human rights sanctions regime

EEAS Deputy Secretary General Stefano Sannino will present the new EU global human rights sanctions regime to MEPs on the Foreign Affairs Committee and Human Rights Subcommittee, on Friday.

On Monday 7 December, the Council adopted a decision and a regulation establishing an EU global human rights sanctions regime.

For the first time, the European Union will now have a framework that will allow it to target individuals, entities and bodies – including state and non-state actors – responsible for, involved in or associated with serious human rights violations and abuses all over the world, regardless in which country they occurred.

For further details on the framework, read more here (Council press release) and here (questions and answers from the European External Action Service on the new sanctions regime).

In addition to the presentation, Mr Sannino, who was also recently appointed Secretary General of the European External Action Service (EEAS), is expected to answer questions from MEPs on the new framework. The meeting is organised jointly by the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Subcommittee on Human Rights.

Following the adoption this week of the new sanctions regime, the Chair of Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights, Maria Arena (S&D, BE) stated: „I welcome the new EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime. It will be an indispensable tool for fighting impunity and for promoting EU human rights policy.“

The meeting

WHEN: Friday, 11 December, at 10.00 CET. The agenda is here.
