Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan: statement of leading MEPs

Foreign committee chair David McAllister (EPP, DE) and Central Asian delegations‘ chair Fulvio Martusciello (EPP, IT) issued the following statement on Monday.

„It is with great concern that we observe the escalation of tensions on the border between the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan, which unfortunately have resulted in numerous casualties. We would like to express our sympathy to the families of those who have lost their lives.“

„We welcome the announcement of a ceasefire and strongly urge both sides to give diplomacy a genuine chance. Only engagement in good faith can help solve the underlying issue of water facilities on disputed territory. Exchange of fire and military clashes are counterproductive and further distance both sides from finding a comprehensive and sustainable solution.“

„In the short term de-escalation and avoiding further casualties should be a priority.“
